Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking Voice Recognition Software
My friend who works at Nuance, sent us a copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, their voice recognition software, so we could play around with it.
So I installed it and gave it a quick whirl. My impressions were favorable. I had tried a previous version, and had been rather unimpressed. This version installed easily (although it reported several errors that I chose to ignore) and seemed to work without any training. It was easy to figure out what to do, and when I had problems, I was able to figure out how to do what I wanted using their built-in help.
I was disappointed that swear words weren't included, and that training them as new words didn't seem to work :-) But otherwise it was pretty good. I'm a fast typist, so I won't be trading in my keyboard, but if I had problems using a keyboard I'd definitely want a program like this. (I guess John McCain never heard of this type of software).
The basic package looks like it starts at about $100. If you call them, ask for Rachel Elias - that's the friend who sent the demo copy.

Former American solder John McCaine is unable to use a keyboard due to years spent being tortured in a prison camp. Would the software now boot up the computer and get on the internet too?

I'm sure he can press a button to boot up the computer. And yes, the software would allow him to get on the internet too. It executes voice commands.

What a cheap shot against John McCain! You, Art, of all people should be more sensitive to true disability! No one cares about your political views!
Wrong you are. *I* care
Wrong you are. *I* care about my political views. And obviously you do (although in a different way) since you seem so upset.
It wasn't a cheap shot about his disability - it was a crack at him trying to imply that his disability prevents him from doing something that much more disabled people are able to do every day. I don't take kindly to people falsely using their disabilities as excuses. That just demeans those who really can't do things because of their disabilities.
If you want to sit and feel sorry for people with disabilities, go on the umpteem chat sites elsewhere. This site is about empowering those of us with disabilities to take control of our problems and fix them.
And if you're going to whine about me, sign your name at least. I'll delete future anonymous comments that are just complaining with no real content.
